COMMUNITY MOSAIC PROJECT
PUBLIC ART PROGRAM UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO 2016
As the Director of the Arts and Crafts Studio at the University of New Mexico, I piloted the Community Mosaic Project. The program offers a competitive student scholarship for a 15 sq ft mural design; those selected through the program were translated into a mosaic by the Arts and Crafts Studio staff. Free workshops allowed students and members of the UNM community to carve and glaze tiles for use in the mosaic. The mural is installed on the exterior south entrance of the University's Student Union Building where it continues to evolve. Each spring, the program offers a new scholarship which leads to an addition of 15-20 sq ft onto the existing mosaic. After creating the program and completing the inaugural mosaic, I have worked as a consultant for the project, helping the Arts and Crafts Studio to translate student designs and install the mosaic.
