THE MAYOR'S ART INSTITUTE
MOSAIC MURAL PROGRAM ALBUQERQUE, NM 2012-2017
The Mayor’s Art Institute is a program funded by the Youth Conservation Corps and the City of Albuquerque's Public Art Program. It hires young people, ages 16-24, to collaborate with a team of professional artists to create public mosaic murals. Each summer the team works together on the design, fabrication, and installation of a 150-300 sq ft handmade, ceramic mosaic. New and returning participants are hired each summer and learn under an apprenticeship model. I joined the institute in 2012 and in 2015 I became a member of the leadership team, helping to guide artistic direction and teach mosaic techniques. During my time in MAI, I developed my figurative practice, leading the large-scale mosaic figures that can be seen on the Juan Tabo Library and the Albuquerque Convention Center.
